Action Against Hunger is a global humanitarian and development organisation dedicated to ending life-threatening hunger. For more than 40 years, the organisation has worked across nearly 50 countries to prevent and treat hunger while supporting communities affected by humanitarian crises and other challenges.

Action Against Hunger is recruiting an experienced Field Coordinator to be based in Maiduguri, Borno. The successful candidate will provide strategic leadership across programme delivery, operational support, security management, government engagement and partnership development, helping to ensure effective and sustainable humanitarian interventions.

Key Responsibilities

Programme Management and Development

  • Promote relevant, integrated humanitarian and recovery programmes in line with the country strategy.
  • Develop potential partnerships and alliances in the state.
  • Ensure effective Project Cycle Management through the line management of Programme Managers and technical guidance from Heads of Departments.
  • Ensure adequate support for programme activities and effective coordination among departments.
  • Explore opportunities for geographical and sectoral programme expansion.
  • Coordinate the integration of programme assessments and evaluation recommendations.
  • Contribute to research and analysis of socioeconomic, humanitarian and security issues to support the development of concept notes and proposals.
  • Collaborate with Grants teams to develop high-quality project proposals, concept notes and donor reports.
  • Contribute to resource mobilisation by identifying potential donors and advocating for support.
  • Integrate contextual analysis into monthly reports and capitalisation reports.
  • Monitor sectoral orientations of the national strategy and their implications for field activities.

Team Management

  • Lead, motivate and support field teams.
  • Ensure effective supervision and management of direct reports.
  • Promote adherence to Action Against Hunger’s Charter and prevent abuse, fraud and other misconduct.
  • Organise regular team meetings and provide updates.
  • Develop and monitor individual action plans for team members.
  • Manage conflicts and support stress mitigation within teams.
  • Escalate matters that could affect programmes, operations, funding or staff and premises security.
  • Coordinate with technical Heads of Departments to ensure appropriate technical support and project supervision.
  • Follow up procurement plans and coordinate with support departments in Abuja on supply, finance, recruitment and administrative requirements.
  • Troubleshoot operational and programme issues in coordination with relevant departments and the Country Leadership Team.

Safety and Security

  • Manage and make decisions regarding the safety and security of staff and field premises under the technical guidance of the relevant security and coordination teams.
  • Update security plans, procedures, SOPs, health and evacuation plans.
  • Develop and maintain formal and informal security networks.
  • Brief staff on security and contextual changes.
  • Support Crisis Management Team analysis and response to developments in the security situation.

Finance, Human Resources and Logistics

  • Oversee HR, Finance and Logistics functions supporting field activities, including supply, procurement, fleet and movements.
  • Review plans and overall expenses in line with established authorisation procedures.
  • Ensure compliance with Action Against Hunger policies, procedures and applicable donor regulations.
  • Define and support HR requirements and contribute to recruitment processes.
  • Ensure recruitment follows organisational policies, procedures and applicable labour laws.
  • Lead weekly base coordination meetings and promote coordination among departments.

Representation and Humanitarian Coordination

  • Represent Action Against Hunger at field level under the guidance of the Area Coordinator.
  • Participate in humanitarian coordination mechanisms, including sector-level coordination in Nutrition, Food Security and Livelihoods (FSL), WASH and other relevant sectors.
  • Promote respect for humanitarian principles among stakeholders.
  • Promote adherence to humanitarian principles and the Core Humanitarian Standard (CHS).
  • Ensure compliance with national laws, regulations and relevant best practices.
  • Develop and maintain formal and informal information networks.

Partner Management

  • Map partners operating in the state.
  • Contribute to the selection and due diligence of local implementing partners.
  • Coordinate with contracted implementing partners for relevant projects.
  • Identify and resolve partnership-related issues and operational blockages.
  • Support partner management and capacity building.
  • Ensure implementation of partner training plans.
  • Identify humanitarian and technical training needs.

Reporting, Quality and Accountability

  • Provide the Country Leadership Team with relevant field reports and documentation in collaboration with Programme Managers.
  • Ensure monthly activity reports are properly documented.
  • Review contractual donor reports before submission to the Grants team and coordination office in Abuja.
  • Compile essential project documentation for capitalisation and audit purposes.
  • Initiate relevant programme surveys when required.
  • Implement recommendations from internal and external assessments, visit reports and reviews through appropriate work plans.
  • Ensure effective complaint and response mechanisms are in place.
  • Maintain high technical standards and professional conduct in all activities.
  • Promote gender equality and adherence to Action Against Hunger’s mandate, charter and staff regulations.

Requirements

Education and Experience

  • Degree in Social Sciences, International Relations, International Development, Humanitarian Response or a related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience with international NGOs in insecure contexts.
  • Previous Action Against Hunger emergency or post-emergency experience is an advantage.
