Airtel Nigeria is recruiting to fill the position of IT Application Subject Matter Expert in Lagos.
Job Description
The successful candidate will drive full-stack development projects within the OPCO Applications team, leading the design, development and deployment of scalable, secure and high-performance applications using Python, Node.js/JavaScript, Flutter and modern cloud-native technologies.
The role covers backend services, APIs, mobile and web applications, database engineering using MongoDB, PostgreSQL and Oracle, and containerised deployments using Kubernetes, Docker and Rancher. The successful candidate will also promote high standards of code quality, application security and engineering practices.
Key Responsibilities
Application Design and Development
- Lead the design and implementation of backend and full-stack solutions using Python, Node.js/JavaScript and Flutter.
- Translate business and product requirements into technical designs, project estimates and delivery plans.
- Build and maintain secure RESTful APIs, microservices and integrations with internal and third-party platforms.
- Develop responsive mobile and web applications using Flutter, ensuring compliance with user experience and performance standards.
Database Engineering and Optimisation
- Design, develop and optimise database solutions using MongoDB, PostgreSQL and Oracle.
- Manage data modelling, query tuning, indexing and data migration for database-intensive projects.
- Ensure data integrity, performance and scalability across database solutions.
Cloud-Native Deployment and DevOps
- Drive cloud-native application deployments using Kubernetes, Docker and Rancher.
- Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines to support reliable, repeatable and automated software releases.
- Implement monitoring, logging and alerting systems to ensure the continuous availability of applications.
Engineering Quality and Standards
- Enforce coding best practices, peer code reviews and architectural standards.
- Establish unit, integration and automated testing practices to improve code quality and reduce production defects.
- Prepare technical documentation, design notes and operational runbooks.
- Mentor and guide engineers through code reviews, collaborative development and knowledge-sharing activities.
Application Management and Delivery
Develop, enhance and support applications across the organisation, including:
- Customer-facing web and mobile applications.
- Internal business and operational applications.
- API, integration and middleware services.
- Microservices hosted on Kubernetes and Rancher platforms.
- Data and reporting services using MongoDB, PostgreSQL and Oracle.
- Other applications within related technical domains.
Governance, Security and Release Management
- Apply secure coding practices, including OWASP guidelines, and ensure compliance with telecommunications, security, data privacy and regulatory standards.
- Follow established change and release management procedures for production deployments.
- Troubleshoot application performance and production issues, conduct root cause analysis and implement lasting solutions.
- Monitor technical debt and continuously improve application performance, security and reliability.
Qualifications and Requirements
Educational Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, Computer Engineering or a related field.
- Relevant certifications in Kubernetes (CKA/CKAD), cloud development (AWS, Azure or GCP), MongoDB or Oracle will be an advantage.
Experience and Technical Skills
- A minimum of eight years’ software development experience.
- Strong expertise in Python and JavaScript (Node.js), with practical experience developing mobile applications using Flutter.
- Strong stakeholder management skills and the ability to coordinate with Product, Technical, IT Operations, Security and Engineering teams.
- Proven experience delivering major database-intensive projects.
- Strong knowledge of containerisation using Docker and orchestration technologies such as Kubernetes and Rancher.
- Hands-on experience with NoSQL and relational databases, including MongoDB, PostgreSQL and Oracle.
- Good understanding of microservices architecture, APIs, CI/CD pipelines, Git and DevOps practices.
- Strong knowledge of Linux systems and production troubleshooting.
