Job Description

HBM Nigeria Plc is seeking an experienced Kiln Coach to guarantee the efficiency and optimization of the burning line. The successful candidate will work with the process, quality and maintenance teams to improve plant performance while developing Control Room Operators to mastery-level competency in VRM and kiln operations.

The role involves daily performance monitoring, evaluation and feedback, analysis of process parameters, operator coaching, and ensuring compliance with safety, environmental and quality guidelines.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform all tasks in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Analyze process incidents and work with CCROs to mitigate their impact and prevent recurrence.
  • Monitor the application of Production SOPs.
  • Coordinate the development of operational procedures for production-related activities.
  • Lead incident review and analysis processes with CCR operators.
  • Set operational objectives based on operator incident review data.
  • Review and analyze shift production charts and reports.
  • Identify possible causes of process target deviations and gaps in optimum operating conditions.
  • Review and analyze clinker quality control data.
  • Review and analyze raw mix preparation quality control data.
  • Review shift downtime reports from relevant production software.
  • Monitor and ensure compliance with environmental regulations.
  • Identify training and development needs for CCR operators and patrollers.
  • Conduct effective one-on-one and group training activities.
  • Develop structured on-the-job training programmes.
  • Design and develop training modules.
  • Play a leading role in POM implementation.
  • Participate in incident analysis and contribute to improvement recommendations.
  • Ensure SOPs are aligned with accepted control strategies and best practices.
  • Support operator training, assessment and certification.
  • Inspect kiln workshops during failures and turnaround maintenance.
  • Optimize production processes using control loops.
  • Develop the competencies of control room operators and production supervisors through coaching sessions and training modules.
  • Create, update and validate production SOPs.
  • Participate actively in plant performance and reliability meetings.
  • Apply effective coaching techniques during on-the-job training.
  • Report and investigate accidents and near misses with the accident investigation committee.
  • Support the Production Manager in preparing departmental operating budgets, monthly accruals and capital projects.
  • Work with section and senior engineers in planning and scheduling major and minor plant maintenance and shutdowns.
  • Maintain the tool inventory used by production personnel.
  • Maintain and administer monthly shift and leave rosters.
  • Support the Production Manager in developing and implementing training plans for production personnel.
  • Identify training needs of shift personnel and provide appropriate guidance and training.
  • Appraise subordinates and recommend promotions, transfers and disciplinary actions where appropriate.
  • Compile daily records of work completed during major repairs and discuss outstanding jobs with the Methods team.
  • Monitor production costs and expenditures to optimize the cost per ton of clinker and cement.
  • Support manpower planning and development.
  • Ensure compliance with environmental and quality management systems, including ISO 14001 and ISO 9001.
  • Ensure the plant surroundings remain in good environmental condition.
  • Promote the efficiency and effectiveness of subordinates and maintain discipline.
  • Maintain product quality within the range defined by the Quality Management System (QMS).
  • Monitor production results, including production volume and energy consumption, to achieve target KPIs.

Reporting and Key Relationships

The Kiln Coach will report to the Production Manager.

Requirements and Qualifications

Applicants should have:

  • A degree or equivalent qualification in an engineering discipline, preferably Mechanical or Electrical Engineering.
  • A minimum of 4 years of relevant experience in the cement manufacturing industry.
  • Strong knowledge of HSE standards.
  • Deep understanding of the cement manufacturing process, including kiln, raw mill and clinkerization operations.
  • Strong analytical and root-cause analysis capabilities.
  • Strong safety and environmental leadership skills.
  • Excellent training and coaching abilities.
  • Strong documentation and governance skills.
