Shell is a global energy company with a long history in Nigeria’s oil and gas industry. The company operates in areas including deepwater oil and gas, natural gas and liquefied natural gas. Shell has been active in Nigeria since 1937 and played a pioneering role in the country’s oil and gas development. Shell’s Nigerian interests today include deepwater operations through Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company (SNEPCo), Shell Nigeria Gas (SNG), and a 25.6% interest in Nigeria LNG (NLNG). Shell’s history in Nigeria dates back to the 1930s when Shell D’Arcy began exploration activities. The company discovered oil at Oloibiri in 1956, leading to Nigeria’s first commercial oil production and crude oil exports in 1958. Shell later expanded into deepwater operations, with production from the Bonga field beginning in 2005. In March 2025, Shell completed the sale of its former SPDC business to Renaissance Africa Energy Company. Shell continues to operate its deepwater, gas and LNG businesses in Nigeria.
