Consular Associate

Work Schedule: 40 hours per week
Salary: USD $43,543 per year

Job Summary

The U.S. Embassy Abuja, Nigeria is seeking eligible and qualified applicants for the position of Consular Associate in the Consular Section.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Work under the direct supervision of the Consular Chief and perform a wide range of responsibilities across the American Citizen Services (ACS) Unit, Nonimmigrant Visa (NIV) Unit, Immigrant Visa Unit and Fraud Prevention Unit (FPU).
  • Provide consular services to U.S. citizens.
  • Conduct non-adjudicatory visa processing.
  • Assist with investigation and validation studies.
  • Handle correspondence with the public, attorneys, U.S. and host governments, Congress and other relevant parties.
  • Secure and maintain a Secret level security clearance.

Job Knowledge

  • General understanding of U.S. policies related to consular and visa operations is required.

Requirements

Education:

  • Completion of High School is required.

Experience:

  • Minimum of two (2) years of office administration experience is required.

Language:

  • Fluent speaking, reading and writing in English is required.
  • Applicants should address this language requirement in their ERA application.

Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to input data into consular systems with minimum errors and identify and correct errors made by applicants and fellow staff.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and general computer skills, including information and database management.
  • Strong organisational skills, including task management and filing.
  • Good communication and writing skills appropriate for drafting official correspondence and reports.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Department of State (DOS) Secret Security clearance.
  • Tact and good judgement when dealing with the public, often under difficult and sensitive circumstances.
  • Sensitivity when evaluating evidence and applying complex regulations correctly.
  • Ability to learn applicable U.S. and host-country laws, regulations, legal precedents and court decisions.
  • Good interpersonal skills.
