The Role
HerVest is seeking a highly technical Analytics Engineer / Data Analyst with strong SQL expertise and a passion for building intuitive data experiences. The successful candidate will bridge the gap between the company’s database architecture and business intelligence layer.
The role involves writing optimised queries across PostgreSQL and MySQL, modelling data, building business intelligence solutions and managing the company’s Metabase environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Serve as the primary administrator for the company’s Metabase instance.
- Build comprehensive dashboards and configure native SQL queries into reusable Metabase Models.
- Set up field filters to make data accessible to non-technical users.
- Write complex and performant SQL using CTEs, Window Functions and JSONB extraction in PostgreSQL and MySQL.
- Transform raw application data into clean reporting tables.
- Monitor database performance and use
EXPLAIN ANALYZEto identify query bottlenecks. - Recommend appropriate indexing strategies and develop queries that minimise impact on production environments.
- Work closely with software engineers and business stakeholders to translate technical data into meaningful business metrics.
- Map new database tables and expose relevant data in Metabase when new software features are deployed.
- Manage SSO, user permissions and data dictionaries to ensure secure and appropriate access to company data.
Requirements
- Minimum of 3 years’ experience writing advanced, production-grade SQL.
- High proficiency in both PostgreSQL and MySQL.
- Deep experience with Metabase, including dashboard development, native SQL queries, variables and environment management.
- Strong understanding of relational database architecture, foreign keys and database normalisation.
- Understanding of the performance implications of querying live database replicas.
- Strong analytical ability and the capacity to translate business questions into accurate data analysis and visualisations.
- Ability to work independently and take ownership of data visualisation and analytics processes.
- Strong problem-solving and communication skills.
Nice-to-Have Skills
- Experience using Git to manage SQL scripts alongside software engineering teams.
- Familiarity with data transformation and orchestration tools such as dbt (data build tool).
- Experience working with data using Python, including Pandas or FastAPI, or TypeScript.
- Previous experience working in a fast-growing startup environment.
