Job Description
The Assistant Production Manager will support the management of cement production operations at the Sagamu plant. The role involves supervising production shifts, ensuring compliance with safety and environmental standards, monitoring and optimising production processes, maintaining product quality and managing production personnel.
Key Responsibilities
Safety, Health & Environment (SHE)
- Enforce compliance with safety rules, Permit to Work (PTW) and lockout/tagout procedures during shifts.
- Conduct toolbox talks and safety briefings for shift teams.
- Ensure compliance with environmental standards relating to emissions, dust control and waste handling.
- Participate in incident and near-miss reporting and investigations.
Shift Management & Production Control
- Lead and supervise production shift activities to achieve daily production targets.
- Implement daily and shift production plans.
- Monitor process parameters and adjust operations to optimise production output and energy consumption.
- Coordinate with the Kiln Coach, field operators and maintenance teams to ensure smooth and continuous operations.
- Authorise the start-up and shutdown of key equipment in accordance with standard operating procedures.
Process Monitoring & Optimisation
- Monitor key process indicators through the Central Control Room (CCR) and field checks, including kiln feed, free lime, temperature profiles, pressure and power consumption.
- Identify process deviations and take prompt corrective action to maintain product quality and plant reliability.
- Escalate major abnormalities to the Production Manager and relevant departments.
Quality Assurance
- Ensure clinker produced during each shift meets required quality specifications.
- Collaborate closely with the Quality/QA-QC department.
- Implement feedback from laboratory test results to adjust process parameters.
- Minimise rework, off-specification products and customer complaints related to operations.
People Management & Training
- Supervise Shift Managers, Kiln Production Coordinators and other production personnel on shift.
- Allocate manpower and manage shift handovers.
- Ensure discipline and adherence to operating procedures.
- Coach, mentor and train production staff on operating procedures, process knowledge and safety.
Reporting & Documentation
- Prepare and submit production reports covering production volumes, stoppages, incidents, consumption and quality issues.
- Ensure accurate and timely recording of operational data and events in logbooks and relevant systems.
- Provide input for daily production meetings.
Requirements
- Degree or equivalent qualification in any Engineering discipline or Sciences.
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience in cement plant operations.
- At least 2 years’ experience in a supervisory or shift leadership role.
- Strong knowledge of kilns and process control systems, including DCS/CCR systems.
- Good knowledge of cement manufacturing processes and equipment.
- Good knowledge of applicable safety laws and regulations.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, including root-cause analysis of process issues.
- Ability to work under pressure and make quick, sound operational decisions.
- Good communication and reporting skills.
