Job Purpose
Language is central to humanitarian action, enabling dialogue, building trust, and ensuring that people affected by conflict can express themselves and be heard.
The ICRC Interpreter will facilitate accurate and meaningful communication among ICRC delegates, affected populations, authorities, and other stakeholders. The role involves interpretation in sensitive and complex contexts, including protection activities, visits to detainees, family reunification processes, and dialogue with parties to conflict.
The position requires sound judgement, cultural awareness, and a strong understanding of the humanitarian principles guiding the ICRC’s work.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide oral interpretation from Russian to English and vice versa during confidential interviews with people deprived of liberty, ICRC institutional dissemination, dialogue with authorities, and activities to establish family links.
- Support activities involving the delivery of Red Cross messages, family tracing, and visits to families of detainees.
- Translate Russian-language materials, including newspaper articles and correspondence, into written English.
- Analyse and report on conditions of detention, security, and other matters relating to the ICRC’s mandate.
- Provide support on other protection activities as required.
Relationships
- Interact externally with authorities, representatives of other organisations, and beneficiaries both within and outside places of detention.
- Develop a network of contacts related to operational needs when required.
- Interact internally with staff across other departments.
Requirements
- Excellent command of English (C1).
- Excellent command of Hausa (C1).
- Proficiency in other ICRC operational languages such as French, Spanish, Russian, Arabic, or Portuguese is a strong asset.
- At least 2 years of professional experience.
- Previous experience as an interpreter or translator is an advantage.
- Strong motivation to work in the humanitarian sector.
- Ability to work under pressure in potentially dangerous environments.
- Open-minded and adaptable.
- University education or a degree in interpretation or translation is an advantage.
Operational and Field Requirements
- In line with the principle of neutrality, the ICRC does not assign personnel to a country of which they are nationals.
- Candidates must be in good health and undergo a medical check-up before field deployment.
- Candidates must possess a driving licence for manual transmission vehicles.
- Candidates must be prepared to accept unaccompanied postings, meaning no spouse, partner, children, or dependants, for the first two missions of at least 12 months each, or a total of 24 months.
