IRC in Nigeria:
IRC has been present in Nigeria since 2012, initially responding to flooding in Kogi State. In February 2014, IRC expanded to Adamawa State to provide humanitarian aid to conflict-affected populations. IRC now operates country offices in Abuja, Mubi, Yola, Maiduguri, Monguno, and Damaturu, delivering programs in primary health care, nutrition, environmental health, womenโ€™s protection and empowerment, protection, child protection, education, food security, and livelihoods.


Job Overview/Summary

The Safeguarding Officer will work under the supervision of the Senior Safeguarding Manager and receive technical oversight from the Regional Safeguarding Advisor. The role involves supporting the Safeguarding team in applying Safeguarding policies within the Nigeria country program and assisting in achieving the objectives set in the strategic action and Safeguarding action plans.


Major Responsibilities

Learning and Coordination:

  • Coordinate safeguarding capacity building and mobilize staff, partners, volunteers, and stakeholders for annual Safeguarding training through various methods (formal/informal sessions, case studies, quizzes).
  • Organize and facilitate safeguarding induction for newly recruited project staff, volunteers, stakeholders, and partners.
  • Compile and develop monthly safeguarding training data/activity reports and submit them to the Senior Safeguarding Manager.
  • Assist in reviewing proposals for safeguarding compliance and coordinate with the MEAL area for safe programming evaluation processes.

Programming Integration:

  • Identify and address training needs in humanitarian response related to protecting children and adults at risk.
  • Facilitate translation of safeguarding IEC materials into local dialects and oversee their procurement and dissemination.
  • Support safeguarding risk assessments of all sectors, projects, and partners.
  • Organize learning forums on Safeguarding practices at various levels (Camps, Host communities, schools, Safe spaces).
  • Provide technical guidance on safeguarding to partners, volunteers, IRC Associates, and consultants.
  • Support supervision and monitoring visits to project and construction sites as requested.
  • Maintain records of training conducted for staff, partners, volunteers, and other parties.
  • Support the dissemination of safeguarding awareness in the community.
  • Perform other tasks as assigned by the line manager.

Qualifications

Education:

  • HND/BSc in Sociology, Social Work, Social Science, or a relevant discipline

Work Experience:

  • 1 to 3 years of experience in safeguarding, child protection, general protection, or PSEAH roles.
  • Experience working with children and vulnerable adults.
  • Experience in humanitarian and developmental contexts related to protecting affected populations.

Technical Skills:

  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Ability to build trust and motivate others.
  • Self-motivated with a strong initiative.
  • Fluency in Hausa/Kanuri Languages.
  • High confidentiality principles.
  • Strong report writing skills with attention to detail.
  • Training, facilitation, and communication skills.
  • Autonomous, efficient, and able to prioritize tasks.
  • Knowledge of human rights, children’s rights, and protection issues in emergencies.

Computer/Tech Requirements:

Ability to Travel: 50% of the time, if applicable
