𝐉𝐨𝐛 𝐒𝐮𝐦𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐲
The Head of English and School Education will provide specialist advice and leadership to support the development and delivery of English language and school education programmes in Nigeria.
The role will draw on expertise in teacher development, English language teaching and learning, programme management, and inclusive education to support country teams in developing and implementing strategies and projects.
The successful candidate will also contribute to business development activities, proposal development, stakeholder engagement, programme monitoring, reporting, knowledge sharing, and capacity building across the English and School Education portfolio.
𝐊𝐞𝐲 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬
- Contribute to business planning and quarterly performance reviews.
- Support progress monitoring against financial and non-financial targets.
- Plan and manage learning, professional development, and capacity-building activities for English and School Education teams.
- Develop impact narratives and evidence related to the education portfolio.
- Mentor and manage members of the English and School Education team.
- Line-manage designated positions where required.
- Contribute to wider departmental and organisational strategy.
- Ensure compliance with British Council performance management, HR, mandatory training, and equality, diversity and inclusion procedures.
- Build and maintain relationships with government partners, education stakeholders, English language teaching organisations, and other relevant institutions.
- Develop professional networks across the UK and Nigerian education sectors.
- Identify potential clients and partners and conduct initial research and opportunity scoping.
- Support business development and ensure potential opportunities align with the global English and School Education strategy.
- Apply appropriate due diligence procedures when assessing potential partners.
- Support the development of marketing and communications materials in line with British Council brand standards.
- Strengthen the visibility and reputation of the British Council and the UK within the education sector.
- Ensure evidence-based principles of English language teaching and teacher development are incorporated into project design.
- Contribute to research, conferences, publications, and thematic work across areas such as English in education, teaching quality, leadership in education, girls’ education, crisis and displacement, life skills, and foundational learning.
- Monitor developments, trends, competitors, and potential partners within the education sector.
- Produce business performance reports covering income, costs, results, and impact.
- Manage income and expenditure accounts for programmes and individual projects.
- Support the development of effective monitoring and evaluation plans.
- Conduct programme and contract monitoring reviews and escalate delivery challenges where necessary.
- Develop and implement strategies for teacher education content.
- Design teacher development programmes using British Council approaches, resources, and standards.
- Advise teams on incorporating English and School Education content, including educational technology-related content, into delivery models.
𝐑𝐞𝐪𝐮𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬
Interested candidates should possess:
- A postgraduate qualification in a relevant field, such as Education or English Language Teaching.
- An English language teaching qualification, such as Diploma ELT or TEFL-Q.
- Experience managing English language-focused teacher education projects.
- Experience delivering externally funded projects or programmes.
- Direct experience in pursuing client-funded contracts.
- Experience engaging with diverse stakeholders, including government officials, multilateral agencies, donors, academics, and other institutional partners.
𝐃𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐫𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐐𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐄𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞
- Experience managing online teacher education projects.
- Project management qualification or equivalent professional experience.
