Job Summary

The Danish Refugee Council (DRC) is seeking a Casual Worker – Driver to provide safe, reliable and efficient transportation support for staff, goods, documents and other authorised materials in Abuja.

The successful candidate will be responsible for the safe operation and maintenance of DRC vehicles, ensuring compliance with Nigerian traffic laws, DRC driving regulations, security procedures and vehicle operating standards. The role will also support logistics activities, including the transportation of goods, delivery of documents and procurement-related errands when assigned.

Key Responsibilities

  • Ensure the safety and security of passengers, cargo and vehicles at all times.
  • Drive in compliance with Nigerian traffic laws and DRC driving regulations.
  • Adjust driving speed and route selection according to road, security and weather conditions.
  • Ensure passengers fasten their seatbelts and comply with DRC safety standards.
  • Maintain communication with the base while on duty in accordance with DRC communication protocols.
  • Conduct daily and weekly vehicle checks covering fuel, oil, water, tyres, batteries, brakes, lights and communication equipment.
  • Prepare vehicles for journeys by checking spare tyres, first aid kits, recovery kits and other required equipment.
  • Ensure timely vehicle servicing and maintenance in line with manufacturer recommendations.
  • Report required repairs and respond appropriately to vehicle faults, breakdowns and flat tyres.
  • Keep vehicles clean, tidy and in good operating condition.
  • Ensure vehicles comply with Minimum Operating Security Standards (MOSS).
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date vehicle logbooks, including trip details, mileage, fuel consumption, oil changes and maintenance records.
  • Ensure vehicle registration, insurance and roadworthiness documents are valid and kept in the vehicle.
  • Maintain a valid personal driving licence at all times.
  • Report accidents, incidents and near-misses immediately and complete the required incident reports.
  • Submit monthly vehicle logbooks, fuel receipts and maintenance records to the logistics department.
  • Load and offload goods while ensuring safe handling and secure transportation.
  • Deliver and collect official documents, correspondence and parcels as required.
  • Provide support with office and guesthouse shopping and procurement errands when assigned.
  • Ensure transported goods are supported by appropriate documentation, including delivery notes and waybills.
  • Verify the condition of delivered goods and return signed documentation to the logistics team.
  • Operate DRC vehicles only for authorised official business.
  • Ensure passengers and cargo being transported are duly authorised.
  • Handle DRC property responsibly and report any misuse or negligence.
  • Maintain confidentiality when dealing with sensitive information and documents.
  • Comply with DRC’s Code of Conduct, Security Standard Operating Procedures and organisational values.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Requirements

  • Minimum of OND or equivalent qualification.
  • Previous experience working as a driver for a humanitarian NGO, preferably operating owned or hired vehicle fleets.
  • Ability to independently operate and manage a vehicle with minimal breakdowns.
  • Ability to read and write.
  • Ability to accurately complete vehicle logbooks and checklists.
  • Valid driving licence.

Additional Qualifications

  • Flexibility to work outside regular working hours when required.
  • Certificate in Defensive Driving from an established driving school or firm is an added advantage.
  • Trade certificate or qualification in automobile mechanics is an added advantage.

Contract Details

Contract Length: Six months, on an as-needed basis

Start Date: As soon as possible
Salary: In accordance with the DRC Casual Worker structure. This is a national position and local Nigerian terms and conditions apply.
