Job Description

The Head of Medical Laboratory will be responsible for the overall supervision, coordination, and effective management of the hospital’s laboratory operations. The successful candidate will ensure the delivery of accurate, timely, and reliable laboratory services while maintaining professional standards, quality control, proper documentation, and compliance with applicable regulatory requirements.

The role requires a qualified and experienced Medical Laboratory Scientist with strong leadership, administrative, and organisational abilities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee the day-to-day operations of the medical laboratory.
  • Supervise, coordinate, and manage laboratory staff and workflow.
  • Ensure accurate, timely, and reliable processing and reporting of laboratory results.
  • Establish and maintain effective laboratory quality control and quality assurance procedures.
  • Ensure proper handling, identification, storage, and processing of patient samples.
  • Monitor laboratory equipment, reagents, consumables, and inventory levels.
  • Ensure proper documentation, record-keeping, and maintenance of laboratory registers.
  • Develop and implement laboratory procedures, work instructions, and operational standards.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable medical laboratory, health, safety, and regulatory requirements.
  • Monitor staff performance, attendance, discipline, and professional development.
  • Prepare laboratory reports and provide operational updates to hospital management.
  • Coordinate equipment maintenance, calibration, and timely reporting of faults.
  • Ensure proper infection prevention and control practices within the laboratory.
  • Manage laboratory-related complaints and support continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Liaise with hospital management, medical staff, and other departments to ensure effective service delivery.
  • Maintain confidentiality of patient information and laboratory records.
  • Perform other duties as may be assigned by hospital management.

Education and Professional Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Laboratory Science (BMLS) or an equivalent recognised qualification.
  • Must be registered with the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (MLSCN).
  • Possession of a valid practising licence.
  • Relevant professional certifications or postgraduate qualifications will be an added advantage.

Experience

  • Minimum of 5 years’ relevant post-qualification experience in a medical laboratory setting.
  • Proven experience in laboratory supervision, coordination, or management.
  • Experience in quality control, laboratory documentation, and staff supervision.
  • Experience working in a hospital or diagnostic laboratory environment.
  • Administrative or management experience will be an added advantage.
  • Experience in equipment management, inventory control, and laboratory reporting is desirable.

Required Skills and Competencies

  • Strong leadership and supervisory skills.
  • Excellent organisational and administrative abilities.
  • Good knowledge of medical laboratory operations and procedures.
  • Strong understanding of laboratory quality control and quality assurance.
  • Good analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.

  • Ability to supervise staff and manage laboratory workflow effectively.
  • Good documentation and report-writing skills.
  • Ability to work independently and demonstrate professional judgement.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and laboratory information systems will be an advantage.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and professional ethics.

Other Requirements

  • Preferably 40 years and above.
  • Applicants residing in Obigbo/Oyigbo or nearby areas will have an advantage.
  • Must demonstrate professionalism, integrity, and a strong sense of responsibility.
  • Must be physically and mentally capable of performing the duties of the role.
  • Must be willing to comply with hospital policies, procedures, and operational standards.
  • Must be able to work effectively with doctors, nurses, laboratory staff, management, and other hospital personnel.
  • Must be willing to provide relevant professional credentials and references when required.

Remuneration and Benefits

  • Monthly Salary: ₦200,000 – ₦350,000, negotiable based on experience and qualifications.
  • Salary will be determined based on the candidate’s qualifications, relevant experience, leadership ability, and overall suitability for the role.
  • Other benefits may be discussed during the interview and will be subject to hospital policy.
