St. Mary Dedication British International School is a private educational institution in Benin City, Edo State, founded by Dr. (Mrs.) Marian Egbe Asakome. The school began as St. Mary Dedication Education Centre, with the foundation stone laid on January 7, 1996, under the motto “Education for Light through Knowledge.” It was officially commissioned in 1996, with its initial nursery and primary schools operating on the Montessori education system. From its humble beginning, the school grew steadily and expanded into secondary education in 2001. It subsequently obtained accreditation for NECO and the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), while also establishing an Advanced Level programme in 2003 that combined ordinary and advanced level education.
In 2004, the school introduced a boarding system and received British Council accreditation to offer the British curriculum, including GCE, IGCSE and Cambridge examinations. This development led to the institution adopting its current name, St. Mary Dedication British International School, with the British curriculum also introduced at the high school level. The school has built a reputation for academic achievement, innovation and participation in inter-school competitions, including French competitions, quizzes and debates. It also pioneered half-termly student assessment reports and has organised international educational excursions to destinations including Ghana, London, Canada and Dubai to broaden students’ exposure.
