Job Role Description
The Mechanical Specialist is responsible for providing subject matter expertise in mechanical maintenance, construction, and project activities while ensuring compliance with Safety, Health and Environment (SHE) standards and regional regulatory requirements.
The role serves as a technical expert for maintenance planning and execution, supports engineering activities, participates in design reviews, and provides guidance during routine maintenance, turnarounds, and new projects. The Mechanical Specialist works closely with operations, maintenance, and engineering teams, influences without direct authority, mentors colleagues, and shares technical knowledge across the organisation.
Job Responsibilities
As a Mechanical Specialist, you will:
- Implement maintenance design philosophies for specific mechanical equipment.
- Provide technical support and coordination across business lines.
- Support the coordination of cost management and productivity improvement initiatives.
- Troubleshoot complex technical issues and provide operational support.
- Provide technical input into the development and delivery of training programmes.
- Share best practices and provide technical feedback.
- Develop personal technical expertise and transfer knowledge to others.
- Serve as a mentor and provide mechanical expertise across the wider organisation.
Skills and Qualifications
Applicants should possess:
- A minimum of a Higher National Diploma (HND) in Instrumentation and Controls, City & Guilds Level 4 in Mechanical, or an equivalent qualification obtained through an oil and gas industry apprenticeship programme.
A Bachelor’s degree (BSc) in Engineering or related sciences without an HND is acceptable only if the candidate has an established and verifiable minimum of five years’ experience working as a mechanical technician in the oil and gas industry.
Please note: This is strictly a technician role.
Applicants must also:
- Have a minimum of 5 years’ relevant mechanical technician experience.
- Be a Nigerian citizen.
- Have completed the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) and possess either an NYSC Discharge Certificate or an Exemption Letter.

Technical experience should include:
- Technical Knowledge and Equipment Operation
- Previous FPSO experience is preferred.
- Instrumentation, Mechanical and Hands-on Skills
- Ability to perform basic repairs, routine maintenance, and equipment adjustments.
- Ability to read and interpret transmitters, sensors, gauges, and control valves.
- Familiarity with Emergency Shutdown (ESD) systems and Fire & Gas (F&G) systems and their role in process safety.
- Work Management Systems
- Good understanding of Work Management Practices.
- Experience using Computerised Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS), particularly SAP, for raising notifications, managing work orders, and searching for materials.
- Technical Documentation
- Ability to read and interpret supplier and manufacturer documentation.
- Ability to identify spare parts from technical documentation.
- Ability to understand and interpret technical and instruction manuals.
- Mechanical Equipment Expertise
- Technical knowledge of:
- Gas and diesel generators
- Pumps (including submersible pumps)
- Compressors
- Pipework
- HVAC equipment
- Electrical drive motors
- Process and utility valves of all types
- Technical knowledge of:
- Attention to Detail
- Ability to monitor equipment performance and detect abnormalities.
- Ability to determine appropriate corrective actions.
- Ability to maintain accurate maintenance logs and reports.
- Ability to identify workplace hazards and implement appropriate control and mitigation measures.
