Main Job Purpose

The Site Electrical and Automation Manager will lead the design, operation, maintenance, and continuous improvement of electrical and automation systems within Unilever’s manufacturing environment.

The role is responsible for ensuring high equipment availability, workplace safety, energy efficiency, regulatory compliance, and continuous improvement while driving automation initiatives that enhance productivity and product quality.

The successful candidate will manage electrical infrastructure, including power distribution, motors and drives, as well as automation systems such as PLCs, SCADA, DCS and instrumentation.

The role will also involve troubleshooting and root-cause analysis, preventive and condition-based maintenance, technical team development, capital projects, system upgrades, and collaboration with production and maintenance functions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Ensure that high-tension (HT) and low-tension (LT) electrical installations, instrumentation, and automation systems at the manufacturing site are properly maintained.
  • Implement planned and autonomous maintenance activities in line with the engineering maintenance roadmap.
  • Drive initiatives aimed at achieving zero production stoppages caused by equipment breakdowns.
  • Optimise repair and maintenance expenditure.
  • Improve machine reliability and equipment availability.
  • Increase the technical knowledge and capabilities of technicians and plant operators.
  • Guide engineering team members in implementing safe electrical maintenance activities.
  • Lead electrical safety audits, identify gaps, develop action plans, implement corrective actions, and monitor improvements.
  • Ensure electrical safety across Unilever-owned sites and facilities.
  • Evaluate electrical systems and automation infrastructure and identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Plan and budget for new electrical, instrumentation, and automation investments.
  • Lead improvement, capacity enhancement, infrastructure, and innovation projects within agreed budgets and timelines.
  • Ensure that capital projects meet safety, health, environmental, quality, reliability, and cost requirements.
  • Take appropriate measures to prevent electrical injuries to employees, contractors, and visitors.
  • Protect company property and the surrounding environment from electrical-related risks.
  • Lead cost-effective programmes to reduce factory conversion costs associated with electrical demand, distribution losses, and energy sources.
  • Evaluate purchased electricity and internally generated electricity and support appropriate generation-switching decisions as cost-saving measures.
  • Conduct skill-gap assessments and drive training programmes to improve engineering knowledge and electrical safety capabilities.
  • Maintain effective relationships with relevant electricity authorities to improve the reliability of power supply to the site.
  • Ensure compliance with Unilever’s mandatory policies covering Safety, Health, Environment, Quality, Travel Safety, and the Code of Business Principles.
  • Manage contractual engineering services, including plant operations and maintenance activities, in line with Unilever’s contract management guidelines and applicable local legislation.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree (BSc) in Electrical Engineering.
  • Experience with HT/LT electrical distribution systems.
  • Automation certification and experience working with Siemens and/or Rockwell automation systems.
  • Strong knowledge of electrical maintenance, automation, instrumentation, and industrial control systems.
  • Experience in a manufacturing or industrial environment is an advantage.
