Job Summary
The Utilities Technician (Mechanical) will ensure the safe, reliable, and efficient operation and maintenance of mechanical utilities equipment at the Agbara Factory. The role supports maximum plant availability through planned preventive maintenance, prompt fault diagnosis, hands-on repair of rotating and static equipment, and basic mechatronics support for utility systems.
The successful candidate will work as part of the team responsible for keeping essential manufacturing services running safely and sustainably while protecting people, assets, and the environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Execute planned preventive maintenance schedules for utilities equipment including boilers, chillers, compressed air systems, cooling towers, pumps, and HVAC/DHU units.
- Carry out reactive maintenance and fault diagnosis on mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems to restore equipment within agreed timelines.
- Perform mechanical overhauls on rotating equipment such as pumps, compressors, fans, blowers, and gearboxes, including bearing checks, alignment, and balancing.
- Support condition-based monitoring activities including vibration checks, bearing inspections, shaft alignment, mechanical seal replacement, and pump performance checks.
- Assist in boiler, chiller, and compressed air operations, including routine inspections, dryer maintenance, separator and filter element replacement, and operating parameter logging.
- Operate and maintain water supply infrastructure including boreholes, submersible pumps, and raw water treatment equipment.
- Diagnose faults on Variable Speed Drive (VSD)-driven equipment and support basic PLC/HMI checks, sensor calibration, and instrumentation loop testing.
- Maintain accurate maintenance records using CMMS, SAP PM, or equivalent systems, including work orders, spare parts usage, and downtime reporting.
- Comply with the site’s Permit-to-Work system and conduct risk assessments, including Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), hot work, and confined space controls before high-risk tasks.
- Participate in Root Cause Analysis (RCA) investigations and implement corrective actions in line with Unilever Safety, Health and Environment (SHE) standards and statutory regulations.
Requirements
Interested candidates should possess:
- Trade Test Certificate or City & Guilds qualification from an accredited Industrial Technical School in Mechanical, Mechatronics, or a related trade.
- OND or HND in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related technical discipline.
- Minimum of 3–5 years of hands-on maintenance experience in a manufacturing, FMCG, or process plant environment.
- Practical experience with rotating equipment including pumps, compressors, fans, mechanical drive systems, and electric motors.
- Familiarity with Permit-to-Work systems, safe isolation procedures, and maintenance documentation.
- Ability to work safely in a shift-based manufacturing environment while complying with PPE, safety, and environmental requirements.
Preferred Qualifications
- OEM or trade training on Atlas Copco compressed air systems.
- Experience with Carrier or equivalent chillers and refrigeration systems.
- Experience with Thermax or Cochran steam boilers.
- Electrical and instrumentation skills, including the ability to read P&IDs and wiring diagrams.
- Experience performing sensor checks and using SAP PM or other Computerised Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS).
Additional Information
- This is a site-based role at the Agbara Manufacturing Plant and requires full on-site attendance.
- Shift work is required to support a 24-hour manufacturing operation, planned shutdowns, commissioning activities, and emergency breakdowns.
- The role requires extensive use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
- Work may involve working at heights, confined space entry under permit, and manual handling of equipment.
