In 1886, Dr. John Stith Pemberton, a pharmacist in Atlanta, Georgia, developed the syrup for what would become Coca-Cola. He initially introduced the new beverage at Jacobs’ Pharmacy, where it was well-received and sold for five cents per glass as a soda fountain drink. The combination of carbonated water with Pemberton’s syrup created a drink described as “Delicious and Refreshing,” a slogan that remains synonymous with Coca-Cola today.

The name “Coca-Cola” was suggested by Frank M. Robinson, Dr. Pemberton’s partner and bookkeeper, who also designed the trademark in his distinctive script. Advertising efforts began with the first newspaper ad appearing in The Atlanta Journal, promoting the novel soda fountain drink. Hand-painted signs reading “Coca-Cola” began to adorn store awnings, with “Drink” added to indicate its availability.

Despite initial sales averaging just nine drinks per day, the beverage gained popularity. Dr. Pemberton, however, did not fully recognize its potential. Before his death in 1888, he sold his remaining interest in Coca-Cola to Asa G. Candler, an Atlanta businessman known for his entrepreneurial skill. Candler proceeded to acquire additional rights and eventually gained full control of the Coca-Cola company, laying the foundation for its future success and global presence.
