Job Purpose

The Accountant will support the implementation of MTN Nigeria’s accounting policies in compliance with International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS), while contributing to financial reporting, technical accounting, audits and the resolution of complex accounting matters.

Responsibilities

• Assist in analysing, developing and implementing MTN Nigeria’s accounting policies in accordance with IFRS.
• Maintain and update financial policies and procedures in line with Group Policy and IFRS requirements.
• Review Product Content Documents (PCDs) and draft contracts to identify accounting implications and ensure compliance with IFRS and Group accounting policies.
• Assess the impact of new and amended accounting standards and organise knowledge-sharing sessions for relevant business units.
• Collaborate with the Financial Operations team to prepare interim and annual statutory reports.
• Conduct technical research on complex commercial transactions and provide accounting consultation and advice.
• Participate actively in month-end closing activities.
• Liaise with internal and external auditors to support smooth and timely audit processes.
• Participate in accounting workshops, training and knowledge-sharing sessions.
• Handle complex and unusual accounting transactions under IFRS and provide guidance on non-standard accounting issues.
• Drive the preparation and submission of financial statements in compliance with statutory requirements and international accounting standards.
• Monitor changes in regulatory frameworks and advise the organisation on necessary accounting and reporting adjustments.
• Plan and coordinate internal and external audit reviews, ensuring timely completion and resolution of audit findings.
• Act as an interface between finance, operations, external auditors and regulatory bodies to facilitate effective communication and accurate financial reporting.
• Provide financial insights and trend analysis to support strategic initiatives.
• Assist with forecasting and budgeting processes in alignment with business objectives and growth plans.
• Develop and recommend best practices to improve financial reporting processes and maintain high reporting standards.

Requirements

• First degree in Accounting or a related discipline.
• Fluent in English.
• Professional accounting qualification such as ICAN, ACCA or equivalent.
• 3–7 years of relevant professional experience.
• Experience working in a medium-sized organisation.
• Experience handling complex IFRS accounting issues, preferably gained within an internationally affiliated audit firm.
• Experience in a telecommunications environment will be desirable.
• Experience in financial management or audit.
• Experience in process re-engineering projects.
