The company is recruiting an Environmental Manager to ensure environmental compliance, minimise environmental impacts and drive sustainable practices across its cement manufacturing operations.
Job Summary
The Environmental Manager will lead environmental management activities at the plant, ensuring compliance with applicable regulations and standards while implementing pollution control measures, environmental management systems and sustainability initiatives.
Responsibilities
- Ensure HBM Nigeria’s safe work rules and environmental practices are understood and consistently followed by Environment Department employees and contractors.
- Set short-, medium- and long-term environmental goals in line with plant objectives.
- Define, monitor and optimise environmental expenses.
- Develop and implement environmental policies and procedures.
- Ensure adherence to HBM Nigeria standards, norms and best practices.
- Manage the performance of the Environment Department using relevant performance indicators.
- Ensure effective performance management of direct reports.
- Build and maintain a motivating work environment within the department.
- Develop skills and training programmes for environmental personnel and evaluate their performance.
- Ensure regulatory compliance relating to environmental activities, alternative fuels and secondary raw materials.
- Work with the Community Relations Manager to identify local stakeholders and understand their expectations.
- Participate in regional and local professional networks focused on environmental issues.
- Coordinate with environmental auditors and regulatory bodies and implement required improvements.
- Define environmental roles and responsibilities across plant management levels.
- Maintain an environmental database containing environmental data, permits and regulatory requirements.
- Analyse environmental impacts of plant operations and ensure appropriate mitigation plans are implemented.
- Ensure applicable environmental regulations are understood and programmes are in place to meet regulatory requirements.
- Develop and maintain the plant’s Environmental Management System.
- Ensure compliance with statutory and legal environmental requirements at state and federal levels.
- Promote the plant as an environmentally responsible organisation.
- Prepare environmental reports, including ISO 14001 compliance, environmental performance and regulatory reports.
- Manage plant environmental and aesthetic projects.
- Develop and maintain the plant’s Environmental Management Plan.
- Develop and manage environmental audit schedules.
- Monitor environmental performance and provide periodic reports to the Plant Manager.
- Coordinate with the Process and Quality departments to improve plant efficiency and achieve environmental KPIs.
- Initiate corrective actions to prevent environmental non-compliance.
- Drive the implementation of Biodiversity Management and Quarry Rehabilitation Plans.
- Organise environmental awareness programmes, talks and activities.
- Drive good housekeeping practices across the plant.
- Drive the implementation and maintenance of the integrated management system, including QMS and EMS.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
Critical Knowledge
- Understanding of kiln operations, raw material handling, clinker production and cement grinding.
- In-depth knowledge of local environmental regulations and international environmental standards, including NESREA, FMEnv and OGEPA requirements.
- Knowledge of Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA), Environmental Management Plans (EMP) and environmental audit requirements.
- Strong understanding of major pollutants such as COâ‚‚, NOx, SOâ‚‚ and particulate matter, as well as pollution control technologies including bag filters and electrostatic precipitators.
- Knowledge of stack emission testing, environmental monitoring equipment and compliance reporting.
- Understanding of GHG protocols, carbon footprint accounting and emission limits.
- Knowledge of waste segregation, recycling and disposal, particularly industrial and hazardous waste.
- Knowledge of co-processing and alternative fuels and raw materials (AFR), including tyres, RDF and biomass.
- Competence in ISO 14001:2015 and Environmental Management System implementation.
- Ability to develop and maintain EMS procedures, policies and documentation.
- Knowledge of wastewater treatment, discharge standards and water reuse systems.
- Understanding of energy efficiency in cement production and renewable energy integration.
- Direct experience managing environmental impacts associated with kiln operations, quarrying, raw material processing and clinker production.
- Proven experience ensuring compliance with local and international environmental regulations.
- Experience obtaining and renewing environmental permits covering areas such as effluent discharge, air quality and waste management.
- Hands-on experience with air emissions monitoring, including stack testing and ambient air sampling.
- Operational knowledge of air pollution control equipment.
- Familiarity with GHG inventory reporting, COâ‚‚ reduction strategies and thermal substitution programmes.
- Practical experience in industrial and hazardous waste management.
- Experience implementing co-processing programmes involving alternative fuels such as RDF, biomass and used tyres.
Critical Experience
- Experience conducting water audits and managing wastewater treatment, water reuse and recycling projects.
- Participation in energy conservation programmes, preferably within kiln and grinding operations.
- Proven experience developing, implementing and maintaining ISO 14001-compliant Environmental Management Systems.
- Experience participating in internal and external audits, closing non-conformities and implementing corrective actions.
- Experience preparing environmental reports for regulatory authorities and corporate headquarters.
- Familiarity with EIA, EMPs, environmental audits and sustainability reporting frameworks.
- Experience coordinating with government agencies, environmental consultants and NGOs.
- Experience in environmental risk assessments, incident investigations and emergency response planning.
- Knowledge of spill response, fire prevention and environmental hazard mitigation.
- Participation in corporate sustainability programmes, climate action plans or decarbonisation projects.
