First Bank of Nigeria is a multinational banking and financial services company headquartered in Lagos, Nigeria. Founded in 1894 by Sir Alfred Jones, the bank is now owned by FBN Holdings PLC, which has a diverse ownership base with over 1.3 million shareholders. Established as the premier bank in West Africa and Nigeria’s top bank brand, First Bank of Nigeria Limited, commonly known as FirstBank, has been a leading financial services provider in Nigeria. In 1966, following a merger with Standard Bank, UK, the bank became known as Standard Bank of West Africa Limited. In 1969, it was incorporated locally as Standard Bank of Nigeria Limited in accordance with the Companies Decree of 1968.

The bank underwent name changes in 1979 and 1991, becoming First Bank of Nigeria Limited and First Bank of Nigeria Plc, respectively. In 2012, it rebranded to FirstBank of Nigeria Limited as part of a restructuring process. This reorganization led to the establishment of FBN Holdings Plc (“FBN Holdings”), which separated the commercial business from other operations within the FirstBank Group, in compliance with new regulations set by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).
