Dangote Group is seeking a Letter of Credit (LC) Specialist to manage international trade finance activities, support secure payments and help mitigate supply chain risks. The role involves coordinating with banks, logistics and procurement teams in the preparation, negotiation and execution of Letters of Credit for raw material imports, equipment purchases and spare parts procurement.

Job Description

The Letter of Credit Specialist will be responsible for managing LC transactions and ensuring that trade finance documentation complies with agreed terms, banking requirements and applicable international trade rules.

Responsibilities

Document Preparation and Compliance

  • Thoroughly review shipping documents, including Bills of Lading, Commercial Invoices, Certificates of Origin and packing lists, to ensure compliance with LC terms and conditions.
  • Collaborate with freight forwarders and suppliers to resolve document discrepancies and minimise payment delays or banking penalties.
  • Ensure trade transactions comply with international trade regulations and International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) rules, including UCP 600.

LC Administration and Bank Coordination

  • Draft, issue and amend Letters of Credit in coordination with corporate banking partners.
  • Act as a primary point of contact for advising, confirming and negotiating LC payments with issuing and advising banks.
  • Maintain an organised filing system for LC applications, amendments and related correspondence for corporate audits.

Risk Management and Cost Control

  • Collaborate with financial institutions to secure payment guarantees and mitigate risks relating to buyer default or supplier non-delivery.
  • Track LC bank fees, confirmation charges and interest rates to support the optimisation of trade finance costs.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Finance, Accounting, International Business, Economics or a related discipline.
  • 6–9 years of experience in trade operations, corporate treasury or international operations, preferably within a reputable banking or financial institution.
  • Specialised qualifications such as Certified Documentary Credit Specialist (CDCS) or Certificate in International Trade & Finance (CITF) are highly preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of international trade laws and ICC rules, particularly UCP 600 and ISP98.
  • Knowledge of the CBN Trade Portal is required.
  • Proficiency in financial tracking software such as Trade360, Loan IQ or AFS is an advantage.
  • Proficiency in SWIFT messaging.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to identify discrepancies in financial and trade documents.
  • Excellent communication skills for coordinating with buyers, suppliers and advising banks across different time zones.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to resolve complex transaction issues.
